Recently I was in a weight watcher meeting at work and one of my co-workers mentioned that when she eats breakfast out she always gets poached eggs as it’s the only way to ensure it is not cooked with tons of butter or oil so that way she could limit her fat intake. What a brilliant idea! I usually don’t go out to breakfast very often as even if I get egg whites they come out fairly greasy.
I was so excited and had some super fresh eggs from my farm and really wanted to try it out for myself.
But I will admit I was too intimidated to poach an egg. All I could remember was something about swirling the water and I pictured my egg making a complete mess. I’m sure Julia Child would not be impressed, but I was happy to find these Poachpods at Whole Foods and that they are so easy to use. (A bit expensive at around $10, but worth it.)
Poachpods are silicone cups that you simmer in water and end up with perfectly poached eggs.
Here….let me demonstrate for you.
Cute little poachpods.
Eggs from KYV farm.
Spray them with a bit of olive oil.
Heat the pot of water filled with about an inch and a half of water to a rolling boil.
It builds up some good steam.
Crack the eggs into the Poachpods.
Lower the heat to bring it down to a simmer.
Gently float the Poachpods on the simmering water.
Cover.
Let cook for 4 to 7 minutes depending on desired “yolk runniness” level.
I like mine runny so I only do 4 minutes.
Remove the Poachpods from heat with a slotted spoon.
Slide a knife around the edge and flip them inside out onto your toast or plate.
Don’t forget to season the eggs. I always forget until I’m halfway done eating and then I realize what I’m missing.
Mmmm…runny.
After my perfectly poached eggs I went to power yoga and then came home to get ready for our cookout. The weather has been gorgeous and today was no exception in the 70′s. I don’t have a lot of pics as I try not to get too many closeups of the kids on the internet and most of the pics had the kids in them!
My hubs the grill master.
(That big thing in the background is the camper with a cover on it).
Madison hanging out,
These are gonna be some GOOD burgers.
Everyone chipped in and brought fresh sides.
My sister in law’s beans were a complete hit.
She said she used Rachel Ray’s Baked Beans with Bacon and Red Onions.
Me and my Mom.
My dad and Chris’s dad.
The ladies hanging out having a beer.
Watching the kids play on the swingset.
I hope your weekend is going just as well. What are you up to?

Oh I can't wait for cookout weather!!! Looks like you guys had a great time!
We did!! I had everyone bring their own chairs and a dish and everything was outside. What a perfect party! So fun with barely any prep or cleanup!
oo that is a GREAT tip! I never thought of that! I rarely go out for breakfast/brunch either but next time I do – poached eggs it is. Also, I always wondered what those little pods were when I saw them at WF. They are so cute and work so well!
OMG I have to get some of those egg pods! Carlos would die for those!!
Nice job on the poached eggs! I can't wait for warmer weather and backyard cookouts!
It's a rainy weekend here and I've been sick so it has been very low key.
Joanne- Yes I can't believe how well they work. I was a little skeptical when I thought they were fairly expensive but they work so well I'm considering getting more.
Mandy-Get them! He will love them!
Tami-I hope you feel better soon…
I need to get those poach pods! They are so perfect. I love poached eggs but its hit or miss generally when I make them. Sometimes they are perfect, sometimes a failure. Jealous of how warm it looks down in Florida. Alhtough today in Boston it 56. Last week snowing..you never know what you are going to get!
I am addicted to eggs in the morning and I have seen these pods before but never thought I would be able to use them. You make it look so easy I am definitely going to buy one the next time I see them. The cookout looks like so much fun! I am still wishing I could find eggs as pretty as yours
They do look perfect! I've seen those little cups here too, maybe I'll need to get one
I was looking forward to this post! They look perfect, I will definitely get these little cups, thank you Dawn for such a detailed post.
I have to laugh because I was thinking of you the whole time I was working on the post! I remembered you were interested in the poachpods.
Runny eggs skeeve me out a little, so I've never had a poached egg… but those are so cute I want to buy them and start eating them! Your cook out looked fun and you look gorgeous in yellow!
What a great little gadget, my husband especially would love those! I'll have to look for them.
