Comment on 5 Exclusive Healthy Food Tips for Camping, Backpacking and Outdoor Lovers by Anna http://www.floridacoastalcooking.com/2015/01/exclusive-meal-tips-for-camping.html#comment-250804 Sun, 25 Jan 2015 17:46:14 +0000 http://www.floridacoastalcooking.com/?p=11609#comment-250804 Great post! Dawn/FCC introduced me to Outdoor Herbivore. I’ve ordered several entrees; can’t wait to try them!

I used to backpack quite a bit, and one of the biggest concerns for backpackers is the weight they have to carry–hence the popularity of freeze-dried foods. I tried a few back in the day, but never took them on the trails because, frankly, they were gross and had WAY too much sodium. I would do the frozen chili or beans and rice, GORP, smushed PB&J, etc. and just deal with the weight. Might’ve been a different story if I’d had OH meals back then! Speaking specifically about the vegan meal choices (Yes! Vegan backpacking meals…and lots of them too!) the nutritional profile looks good and the ingredients are pretty clean. Again, can’t wait to see how they taste!

These days, I don’t do much backpacking, but I do a LOT of traveling…sometimes to places where eating plant-based isn’t always an option. I’ve always taken things like meal bars before (which gets tiresome fast), but if these OH meals work out, I could see them being ideal for travel too!

Anyway, thanks for the OH intro, FCC, and let me know if you need any backpacking pointers!

Fresh tomatoes provide vitamin C and calcium, balsamic vinegar lends a sweet and tangy kick, and the vino brings in a sophisticated, antioxidant-enriched depth. An eighth of a cup may not sound like much, but use a bold red wine like a Zinfandel, and a little will go a long way. […]
